All weekend, Kyle mulled over Charity’s statement about how he had no right to stop her from seeing other men. She was completely correct. He either needed to suck it up or do something about it. He’d decided on the latter option. She was no longer riding the emotional rollercoaster she’d been on after the confrontation with that reporter, and she still wanted him, which meant he was free to go for it.

She flounced into work on Monday morning in a form-fitting floral dress, smelling like oranges and looking like spring. He’d wanted to pounce on her immediately, but it was important he do this properly, which was why he found himself approaching her in the stacks, out of sight of everyone else, during the quiet period before lunch.

“Charity,” he said as he came up behind her. His gaze wandered over her slim form and down to her delicately rounded butt. His hands twitched, and he curled his nails into his palms to stop himself from reaching for her. “Can we talk?”

She straightened, turned to face him, and tucked a loose lock of spun-gold hair behind her ear. “What’s up?”

He took a breath and let it out. “I’m sorry for being weird on Friday. The truth is, I like you more than I’m comfortable with and I acted like a jerk because I didn’t know how to handle it.” He eased his thumb along the furrow in her brow. Her lips parted, and she angled her head. It looked like an invitation, but he didn’t want to make any assumptions. “I want to make it up to you, and I’d like to start with a kiss. Is that okay?”

“Yeah.” She nodded, her eyes glazed, but as he stepped forward to close the space between them, her hands came up to his chest. “Wait a moment. Just so nothing gets lost in translation, I don’t want any kisses—no matter how good they are—unless you plan to take me on a date.”

“Okay.” The reply came easily and brought with it a sense of relief because she must truly be interested in something serious with him or she wouldn’t be making conditions like that.

“Okay?” Her eyes focused. “It’s that easy?”

He nodded. “Yes, but I get to choose what the date is.” He wanted to share something with her that would make it clear who he was in no uncertain terms so she didn’t harbor any illusions. He was a guy with hobbies that probably didn’t align with hers, but he loved them and wasn’t about to play them down or reduce that part of himself to win her affection. Nope, she’d be coming into this thing with her eyes wide open.

Charity hesitated for a second, then smiled. “You got it. A date of your choice.”

Deal made, Kyle clasped her face between his palms and kissed her. Charity’s hands dropped from his chest and wound around him, settling in the small of his back. She pressed closer and her hair shifted, a waft of citrus-scented shampoo enveloping them.
